Mathias Kauage

Sir Mathias Kauage was born in 1937 in Gugulme from the small highlands province of Simbu,PNG. He was a famous PNG self taught artist who travelled to many parts of the world for his art. Quiet, almost sef-effacing except when among friends, when his skills as a colourful raconteur and his sly sense of humour would bubble out, he had that once in a generation talent that sets an artist apart. Mathias died at the age of 66 in 2003 and is today represented by collections of paintings and works throughout Europe, USA, Britain and Australia. This simple man stood for the good name of PNG and it’s people wherever he went.
