Phillip Yobale

Our dear friend Phillip passed away in 2009. Peace be upon Phillip Yobale. Phillip Yobale’s work explored social themes of poverty & displacement in PNG. Faces & images of people appear through the melancholy paint work. Phillip was passionate about his art and was a powerful advocate in developing the talent of young artists. He held a Bachelor in Education from the University of Goroka, along with a Diploma in Fine Arts at the University of PNG. His works are held in both private and public collections internationally. Phillip won the German Mission Art Advancement Award in 1999, his paintings celebrated the depth of PNG spirituality. In 2000 his work titled “Spirit Dance” was secured by the National Gallery of Australia, in the Australasian Art Collection. His finely detailed paintings use watercolour and ink on paper drawing inspiration from contemporary interpretation of myth & legend.
